SEASON TICKET No.1
«Music journey with Fabio Mastrangelo»
In the new season Fabio Mastrangelo and his orchestra will continue a round-the-world journey. This time the Season Ticket program offers not only the works created by the great composers of the past, but also the compositions written by the modern authors. For the first time the Season Ticket «Music journey» includes a concert version of an opera - it will be famous Carmen by Georges Bizet. Together with Maestro spectators will visit countries such as France, Hungary and Spain; they will get to know Fabio Mastrangelo’s favorite composers in the concert «Russia» and, of course, dive into the atmosphere of Italy, dear to Maestro’s heart.
The first concert of the Season Ticket – «France» – will present Carmen, the opera by the famous French composer Georges Bizet, based on the well-known novella by Prosper Mérimée, which takes place in the hot and dangerous Spanish town Seville. After hearing this opera for the first time, Tchaikovsky wrote: “Bizet’s opera is a masterpiece, one of those few things which are destined to reflect musical aspirations of the whole era in the most powerful way. In ten years’ time Carmen will be the most popular opera in the world…” Pyotr Ilyich proved to be right - Carmen is still one of the most popular theater performances.
The second concert will present to listeners two countries - France and Spain. The program mostly consists of Debussy’s and Ravel’s well-known works, but it also includes rarely performed compositions such as Debussy’s lyric cantata La Damoiselle Elue and El amor brujo – ballet with singing by the Spanish composer Manuel de Falla, who spent many years in Paris like most of the Spanish composers. This brilliant work created in 1915 by the master of Renacimiento español was commissioned by the famous flamenco dancer Pastora Imperio. The ballet has many stage versions and some film versions. In various years prominent choreographers such as Serge Lifar, Mai Murdmaa and Mikhail Lavrovsky turned to this De Falla’s masterpiece.
The third concert of the Season Ticket is dedicated to Italy – native land of Maestro Fabio Mastrangelo. The program embraces his favorite works written by the Italian composers, featuring arias and duets from the well-known Puccini’s operas as well as Dance of the Hours from Ponchielli’s opera La Gioconda and music from the ballet The Seasons on Verdi’s operas. This concert will leave no one untouched, as Italian music is full of sunlight, smell of the sea and burning passion!
Next journey will take you to a land of czardas and gulyás – Hungary. Besides these popular Hungarian specialties, this country gave the world famous composers such as Ferencz Liszt, Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály. But it must not be forgotten that in due time it was powerful Austro-Hungarian Empire, so rousing Hungarian dances of the Austrian composer Johannes Brahms will be performed as well.
The final concert of the «Music journey with Fabio Mastrangelo» is dedicated by Maestro himself to his second homeland – Russia. His favorite works by the Russian composers are included in the program: Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No.3 will be performed by a young pianist, Fabio Mastrangelo Foundation’s Special Prize Winner Xiaoxiao Wei. The program will be completed with Sergei Rachmaninov’s stirring tragic Third Symphony, filled with inexhaustible love to Russia.

SEASON TICKET No.2 «Gershwin and his time»
Dedicated to the 120th anniversary of the composer’s birth
One of the most interesting chapters of the history of music is connected with the name of the American composer and pianist George Gershwin. The formation and the peak of his creative work coincide with “the Jazz Age” – that is how the greatest American writer S. Fitzgerald called the period of 1920s-30s in the USA. This form of art had a fundamental influence on the composer, who strived to express the spirit of his time in music. Gershwin considered jazz to be folk music.
Gershwin’s work was highly valued by music critique, contemporary to the composer. One of its most outstanding representatives, W. Damrosch, wrote: “Many composers walked around jazz like a cat around the bowl with hot soup, waiting for it to cool down a little… George Gershwin… managed to do a miracle. He is a prince who took Cinderella’s hand and openly announced her to be a princess to the world, much to the rage of her envious sisters”.
Five concerts of the Season Ticket «Gershwin and his time» embrace the works created by the composers of that epoch – both American and Russian. You will listen to the music of the celebrated jazz musicians Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk, songs by Jerome Kern, musical and film soundtracks by Bernstein, Loewe and Rodgers as well as unjustly forgotten works by Alexander Tsfasman…. Prominent Russian and foreign jazz performers such as singer Larisa Dolina, pianists Daniel Kramer and Stanislav Chigadaev will be the soloists in the concerts of this Season Ticket.
The Season Ticket will open with undying masterpiece by George Gershwin – the opera Porgy and Bess. This work, written in 1935 and adapted from Heyward's play Porgy, acted like a bomb explosion. The overall critique went like this: “This is finally the first real and quite American opera”. Starting from the very beginning of its triumphant march through the opera stages of America – first in Boston, then on Broadway – it reached Europe in 1945. However, it became truly popular only after it had been performed by a black American troupe who was doing a European tour in 1952-53. No other American opera, created before and after it, has managed to shake the firm position of Porgy and Bess in the music life of the western world.
Second concert of the Season Ticket will be dedicated to the contemporaries of George Gershwin - famous jazzmen, trumpet player Dizzy Gillespie and pianist Thelonious Monk, born exactly 100 years ago.
Dizzy Gillespie, Jazz trumpet virtuoso, vocalist, composer, who became a major figure in the development of bebop and modern jazz, won love of the audience thanks to his unusual «explosive» manner of performance. In 1989, he was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Thelonious Monk is a jazz pianist and composer, one of the founders of bebop. His compositions and improvisations feature dissonances and angular melodic twists, and are consistent with Monk's unorthodox approach to the piano, which combined a highly percussive attack with abrupt, dramatic use of switched key releases, silences and hesitations. Monk had a unique improvisational style and made numerous contributions to the standard jazz repertoire, including Round Midnight, Ruby, My Dear, In Walked Bud and 52nd Street Theme among others. His compositions have become jazz classics and have been performed by many musicians.
Third concert of the Season Ticket will present to the public a program of Gershwin’s and Kern’s songs performed by the famous singer Larisa Dolina. Jerome Kern is an author of the more than 700 songs and a number of popular operettas. His best works, especially operetta Show Boat, have become American jazz classics. The program also includes jazz suite by outstanding Soviet composer Alexander Tsfasman, one of the founders of the Soviet jazz, head of several jazz groups, such as Jazz Orchestra of the All-Union Radio.
The fourth concert will take us back to the serious works of Gershwin – the program includes his Piano Concerto in F Major. In the 2nd part music from the musicals by Loewe (My Fair Lady) and Rodgers (The Sound of Music) will be performed. This music is well-known to most of the audience thanks to brilliant Hollywood films of the same names.
The Season Ticket «Gershwin and his time» is rounded off with probably most popular composer’s works Rhapsody in Blue and Variations on a theme «I Got Rhythm». 120 years after George Gershwin’s birthday his music keeps on playing and getting more and more new fans.
